Deepfakes & Misinformation 🎬

Detecting AI-Generated Fake Content

Session 8: Critical Thinking in the AI Age

What Are Deepfakes? 🤖

A deepfake is a video or image created or manipulated by AI to make it look like someone did something they didn't do.

How Deepfakes Are Created:

  • AI uses thousands of photos/videos of a person
  • AI learns how they move, speak, and look
  • AI creates a fake video that looks real
  • Can make anyone say anything or do anything

Why Deepfakes Are Dangerous ⚠️

Deepfakes can cause serious problems:

Real Dangers:

  • Political: Fake videos of politicians before elections
  • Fraud: Fake CEO videos trick companies into sending money
  • Harassment: Non-consensual fake intimate videos of real people
  • Misinformation: Spread false news that looks real
  • Trust breakdown: Hard to believe videos even when real

Real Deepfake Examples 😨

Deepfakes That Happened:

  • 2019: Fake Obama video went viral (as example)
  • 2020: Fake Zuckerberg video about controlling people
  • 2023: Fake Drake rap song created with AI voice
  • Celebrity scams: Deepfake videos used to trick fans out of money

Problem: Even when clearly fake, these videos spread on social media before being debunked!

How to Spot a Deepfake 🔍

With practice, you can often tell deepfakes from real videos. Look for these signs:

Red Flags:

  • Blinking: Deepfakes often miss natural blinking patterns
  • Eyes: Strange pupil reflection or unnatural eye movement
  • Mouth: Lips don't sync perfectly with audio
  • Hair/edges: Fuzzy around face edges or strange hair movements
  • Facial expressions: Wrong emotion for what's being said
  • Lighting: Face lit differently from background
  • Skin texture: Unrealistic skin or weird aging

Detection Tools for Deepfakes 🛠️

Scientists are creating AI tools that detect deepfakes.

Detection Methods:

  • AI detection software: Programs that analyze video for deepfake markers
  • Metadata analysis: Check when/where video was created
  • Audio analysis: Check if voice is natural or synthetic
  • Blockchain verification: Digital signatures proving authenticity

Challenge: As AI gets better at making deepfakes, detection must improve too!

Misinformation & Fake News 📰

Deepfakes are just one type of misinformation. AI also helps create fake text and images.

AI-Generated Misinformation:

  • Fake articles: AI writes convincing but false news
  • Fake images: AI creates fake photos of events
  • Bot comments: AI pretends to be real people on social media
  • Targeted ads: False claims designed to manipulate you

Source Verification: Check the Source 📋

Before believing content, always check if the source is trustworthy.

Verification Checklist:

  • Author: Who created this? Do they have credibility?
  • Original source: Where did it first come from?
  • Date: Is it recent? Old news taken out of context?
  • Fact-check: Look it up on Snopes, FactCheck.org, or Google
  • Cross-reference: Do other trusted sources report this?
  • Expertise: Is the author an expert on this topic?
  • Bias: Does the source have a political bias?

Reverse Image Search 🔎

You can use reverse image search to check if an image is fake or from somewhere else.

How to Use It:

  • Go to Google Images
  • Click the camera icon (search by image)
  • Upload the image or paste the URL
  • Google shows where the image came from
  • If an image is from a different story, it's misleading!

Critical Thinking Rules 🧠

The best defense against misinformation is critical thinking:

Always Ask Yourself:

  • "Does this match what I know to be true?"
  • "Why would this person/company tell me this?"
  • "What emotion is this content trying to trigger?"
  • "Would this be reported by trusted news sources?"
  • "Is this too good (or bad) to be true?"
  • "Am I believing this just because friends shared it?"

What We Learned 🎓

  • Deepfakes are AI-created videos that look real
  • Deepfakes can be detected by looking for unnatural movements, blinking, eye reflections
  • Verify sources before believing content
  • Reverse image search reveals where images come from
  • Misinformation is widespread - stay skeptical
  • Critical thinking is your best protection
  • If it seems fake, it probably is!

Stay Critical! 🎉

Deepfakes and misinformation are real threats - but you have tools to fight back
